"Tenugui" is a traditional Japanese towel.

Unlike towels, "Tenugui" is cut at both ends.
However, it is not defective.
It has been used that way for a long time.
It is because it is more advantageous not to fold over and sew.

*Easier to dry and keep clean.
*Easily torn and can be used as a substitute for bandages or strings

etc.

In kendo, when a menshita is wrapped around the head, the fabric becomes thicker at the seam allowance, and it becomes painful when worn for long periods of time.
Therefore, it is more advantageous to leave the seam allowance uncut.

You will probably notice frayed threads at first, but you can cut only the threads that appear with scissors.
The threads will gradually stop coming out after a few washes.
If you use it well, it can become like a nice fringe.

Tenugui becomes softer and more comfortable the more you use it.
This is the opposite of towels, which become stiffer the more they are used.
That is the good thing about Tenugui.

手拭いは、両端が切りっぱなしになっているのが伝統です

手拭いは、タオルとは違い「両端が切りっぱなし」になっています。
しかし不良品ではありません。
ずっと昔からそのように使われていました。
折り返して縫わない方がメリットがあるからです。

　*乾きやすく清潔が保ちやすい
　*簡単に裂くことができ、緊急時に包帯や紐の代わりにできる

　などなど

剣道では、"面下"として頭に巻いた時に、
縫い代の箇所だけ生地が厚くなっていると、長時間面を被っているうちに
気になったり痛くなってたりしてしまいます。
ですから、切りっぱなしの方が使い良いのです。

始めはほつれ糸が気になると思いますが、出てきた糸だけをハサミで切ってください。
糸は、何度か洗濯しているうちにだんだん出てこなくなります。
上手く使うと、素敵なフリンジのようになることもあります。

手拭いは、使えば使うほど柔らかくなり使い心地が良くなり、
使うほどに硬くなってしまうタオルとは反対ですね。
そこが手拭いの良いところです。
